Abstract :
The aim of the present study was to analyze the factors affecting forgiveness of infidelity in traumatized women and men, which was conducted qualitatively using a phenomenological approach. The statistical population of this study included Iranian women and men who had been betrayed by their spouses in their current or past relationships and had forgiven them. The sampling method was voluntary non-random and snowball sampling, and 14 participants (9 women and 5 men) were selected. The research instrument was a semi-structured interview. The seven-step Colizzi`s method was used to analyze the data. The results of initial coding were associated with the formation of 71 semantic units, which, according to their commonality, were categorized into 17 subsamples. Finally, the subthemes were classified into 4 main themes, which are: components related to the individual, components related to the spouse, components related to the relationship, and components related to the environment and culture. In summary, the findings of this study indicated that the process of forgiveness following marital infidelity is not limited to individual reactions, but rather results from a complex interaction of personality factors, the quality of the relationship before and after the betrayal, the emotional and behavioral responses of the unfaithful spouse, as well as cultural and environmental components. These findings highlight the necessity of adopting a comprehensive and multidimensional approach in couples counseling and therapy, emphasizing the importance of organizing effective therapeutic interventions based on a holistic understanding of the phenomenon.
