Abstract :
Excessive obsession with perceived defects in the appearance of obese people affects their quality of life. The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of paradox therapy on body image bias and physical coping strategies in obese people with body dysmorphic disorder. The method used in this study was a semi-experimental design with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of the study included 49 obese people with body dysmorphic disorder who referred to nutrition clinics in Tehran for weight loss treatments in 2023. According to the purposive sampling method, 36 eligible individuals were selected and randomly assigned to two equal groups, including the experimental group (18 people) and the control group (18 people) Then, the participants completed the Yale Brown practical obsessive-compulsive scale, multidimensional body self-relationship questionnaire (MBSRQ), and the body image coping strategies (BICSI). Data analysis and research findings using one-way analysis of covariance showed that paradox therapy had a positive effect on reducing body image bias, and increased evaluation of appearance, body fit, and body satisfaction, and decreased subjective appearance and weight orientation. This study demonstrated that paradox therapy was effective on physical coping strategies (reducing appearance repair and avoidance and increasing rational positive acceptance), (p ≥ 0.05). The results of the study showed that paradox therapy can help strengthen the client's emotional state and help him understand the irrationality of his emotional reactions, which can be suggested for the development of more adaptive strategies in the field of body image in body dysmorphic disorder.
